I'm a little surprised we haven't seen a comparison test between the G70 and new 3 series

^ yes, i focus more on torque curves for off-the-line response. the G70 peaks at 1400, the 330i at 1550. with a turbo the curve is usually quite flat until ~4500 where it starts to drop off and which is where hp tends to peak. so the area under the curve should be comparable - except the 330i has a 13% peak torque advantage.

So yeah, here's the graph of torque and hp curves (assuming this site is reasonably correct):

You can see that the torque looks very different and that flows through to very different hp curves, even though the peak HP is very similar.

When you see specs on turbochargers individually rated at 200-220hp, is that over what the engine HP is or is that total based on the type of engine is should be mated to?

It's a general rule of thumb. Usually means that, when using that specific turbo, your total power output will be as advertised. It's kind of the ideal power output for that turbo. It can put out a bit more, but it will be very inefficient when doing so.

That said. If you're current engine/turbo combo is already making around 200-220HP, and you want to make more power, then you'll want to choose a bigger turbo than one that advertises those same numbers.

In the end, the Genesis G70 retains its crown as AutoGuide.com‘s favorite sport sedan. Although it’s lacking in features and technology when compared to the BMW, it feels more focused on what matters in this segment: Driving dynamics and luxury. Add the fact that it’s also much more affordable, and the lack of tech doesn’t seem like such a big deal anyway. The BMW “feels like it’s trying to be a million different things — a smartphone, a sports car, a luxury car, a spa, a family car, and more — but it’s doing none of them well,” Sébastien says. The Genesis G70 makes fewer compromises and is executed with so much focus that anyone who drives both sedans back to back and can’t see how impressive the G70 is can be classified as a diehard BMW fan who’s in it for the badge. For these people, go ahead and get the BMW, you’ll be happy with it. But for everyone else, the Genesis is not only a smart choice but also the one we think will bring you more joy.

The G70 is almost a gen behind in tech (as well as dash design) of H/K's latest offerings (even the Kia Soul gets a 10.25" LCD in its upper trim).

Most of the time, automakers do either a more extensive sheetmetal or interior refresh for the MCE, but can see Genesis doing both in the case of the G70 (should be getting changes to the exterior to bring the design in line w/ Genesis' new design language a la the facelift for the G90).

But the majority of buyers will sacrifice that (relatively) little difference in driving dynamics for more space.

The next G70 should be on a lighter platform, so that should allow Genesis to grow it some.

Good comparison and it's good to see perspectives from BMW/Benz-ophiles. The constant nagging about lack of a true manual mode could perhaps be alleviated if it was baked in as a dedicated button instead of having to go through traction/stability. Other points sound reasonable though, the transmission in the G70 is not as good as the ZF or the 4matic but it's good enough for spirited driving for most people. And I'm still waiting for a dedicated genesis service department and praying it opens up soon because having non-dedicated hyundai service people work on these cars is a sore point of owning a G70 at this point.

My biggest gripe about my Hyundai Genesis have been Hyundai service departments. Whether it was the person at one dealership who told me that my wheels checked out on the balancing machine (despite there being a visible wobble- I had to walk back there with him and his tech to point out to them how the wheel was wobbling on their own equipment), or the service manager at another dealership who sent me a nasty email after leaving them a bad review (and when I told him why I left them a bad review- they had unplugged my dashcam and radar-detector without plugging them back in, adjusted my radio without changing it back, he never responded or acknowledged the problem). On another occasion, I had enabled my alarm on my car remotely after working hours, only to have someone from the dealer trigger the alarm an hour past closing-time. Why exactly did they need to open my car an hour past closing time? Your guess is as good as mine. Yet another dealer would take three hours to perform an oil change (despite an appointment, and yes, I like to wait), with more than 30 minutes of that time consisting of the service-writer taking their time getting me checked out.

I also had to wait 3 hours to get my oil changed on my previous car even though I had set up an appointment. I left a bad review for that one and they got better afterwards. For the G70, another dealer that I used dropped the ball on several issues. I am so relieved I haven't had to use my warranty for my G70 because I would hate to work with any hyundai service dept around me. Knock on wood.

I dont know....something seems off. I would expect the BMW to maintain its lead over the entire run since the BMW engine is so underrated. The numbers say the m340i will always beat a G70/stinger stock vs stock

Looks about right to me. I don't know if they're using launch control or not (doesn't seem like it) - but each time the BMW let the Stinger get the jump on him when starting. So, even despite the delayed start for the BMW, he still fairly easily reels him in and passes him.

Today I had a middle aged lady in an A4 try to skip ahead of me at a light when the road ahead was closed down to one lane due to construction. No one behind me! She just wanted to prove something but it was weird seeing someone from that demographic try it. It’s nice knowing which cars you can easily pull on vs the ones that might be better left alone like the m340i
