Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

hey guys so i'm at 4k miles now and I've consumed a total of about 1.5 - 2 quarts of oil.

i know its well below hyundai's limit but what do you guys think?

i also confirmed that my last oil change from the dealer they used 5-30.

5w30 what? Dino? Syn Blend? Syn? brand? dealers may use whatever meets minimum specs.

I guess I should of specified lol
The dealer used synthetic 5w30 (don't know wich brand though)
I just measured my oil on level ground and its right below F. I say I've consumed 1.5 in 4k miles.
Is that average for a 12 r spec?
I know it's not enough to warrant a new engine from hyundai per hyundais guidelines

I consumed less than what was "ok" by Hyundai and still got a new motor. It all depends on how much your willing to fight.

FYI, my 2011 4.6 MPI has burned zero quarts in the 3500 miles I've owned it since purchase. Time for an oil change.

can you and anyone else that received a new motor share with us what dealer you had this experience. I am currently dealing with my 2012 at Hardin Hyundai in Anaheim, CA . I've been going through the oil consum test for 6 months now. at 500 miles I can't believe they can actually measure with precision the burn rate. So I stopped going for 3k miles. Now the dipstick is bone dry and my oil light comes on every time I turn a corner or stop hard.

I've contacted Hyundai USA to complain about this as I've been complaining about the burn for 2 years and for 1.5 years I've been given the run-around saying it is normal for this engine to burn some oil. I've had to add as much as 4 quarts between oil changes. I think the amount burned is based on how the car is driven.

I've let the dealer know this is a thread on a forum so I know I am not alone with this issue. Would be good to share information so others can point to the dealers that have been responsive and hopefully get the bad dealers to work with us.

I have almost 151,000 miles on my 2011 4.6 and it has never burned/consumed any oil. I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles.

They are pulling a stunt. The car was promoted, advertised and states in owners manual for 5-20. Adding the 5-30 oil will skew the burn rate of the oil. For just that certain time in 2012 where there could be a problem running 5-30 will get the purgatory like consumption you are getting. Switch to 5-20 regular, blend or synthetic, you will see oil. consumption go up. And consumed way beyond average

The 4.6 engines did not have oil burn issues. It was limited to 2012 MY 5.0's (both non-Rspec and Rspec trims) with build dates before approx. February 2012.

Hence why I bought my 4.6... which doesn't have an oil burn issue.

The owners manual clearly states you can use 5W30.

This is the best V8 I've ever owned and that includes the GM 5.3 and LS2 I had.

do you have paperwork showing your complaints over the last two years?

Congrats. Wish you got the entire crate engine. What did they do to the seats to make the stretching not come back, ever?

not sure if it was the whole engine or not id have to search the part number , i believe it was 13k. my frame was bent so i got a new seat. that leather is hopeless lol

Yes. I think if all those having issues with getting the BS go away treatment need to open a case with Hyundai USA and let them know u know other dealers have changed engines. Having the names of the dealers will make it difficult to deny they have a known problem.

Yes. The leather stretching is hopeless. [emoji35]

That was not the point. Yes, the motor "can" use 5-30. I was stating the promote 5-20, used they on their EPA tests. And to this day still promote 5-20. And I pressed that this weight will show more oil burn for those with the defective motors. That the 3-30 many times slows the burn enough for Hyundai to put that car being tested into a oil consumption purgatory. Burning 1-2 quarts per 3-4k. Slow enough for push back by the dealers who are shielding Hyundai from this curse.

Stay with 5-20 for the test. Is suggest if they use conventional oil for the test, more burn. Than a good synthetic. Also, watch for them to put in a "high mileage" blend or high mileage oil of any kind. That would likely skew the test in the favor of "nothing is wrong".

On another general note:

I do not understand why dealers carry the flag for sweeping this under the table. They should want the work of a crate engine replacement.

I would also not settle for rebuild locally by a dealer. No way that will have the same quality of assembly than the special tools, automation, and processes the factory has. For someone with a motor under 60k miles, a local rebuild is not the same. Sure, if at 200k, local rebuild on the click makes sense. And considering the value of my time, only a new crate motor will suffice as beginning to compensate for the hassle.

I can only tell you how I got my rebuild through hyundai claims 1866-367-9040. Of course they gave me the run-around response that it's normal, but I kept gathering data to support my case anyways.

I recall I bought the car 6/13.
I went in at 3k at the first sight of oil loss ~9/13. Then I continued to build a paperwork trail at my dealer. Was experiencing 1qt loss every 1000 miles at the most, or .50 at the least. It was not a consistent consumption rate and that's what was tricky/frustrating about it. But I still kept at it! Yes, I too had a period of time when the BURN RATE STOPPED! Must have been the time when I went to vegas ~11/13 from LA. So I stopped going in to do consumption test for a period but data trail was still kept. And the key is to bring it to the dealer so they can document:

*as precisely as possible try to bring it in every 1000 miles* so you know and your service people know exactly how much consumption. This was what I was told from a good service guy. I almost felt like this was a pac-man game bouncing back and forth trying to catch 2 consecutive back to back 1qt-short-every-1k-mile type of game.

I know it's a big time hassle, but this was the pain in the butt step-by-step I had to do. My dealer topped me off each time I was short oil btw, except once. But finally at 14.5k miles 11/14 (and in my mind still less than 18 months under CA lemon law), I got the rebuild call order. I'm lucky I never had to bring the lemon law up. I know for sure there was at least 2-3 data points to support the 1qt loss every 1000 miles theory. But for goodness sake, bring it to your dealer so they can top off your engine! Don't let the low oil light come on because this can be interpreted as owner neglect!

Right now with rebuilt engine at 18.6k there's absolutely no oil loss at all which I'm thankful for! Only noticed once on a warm startup with low idle and engine virbration to cabin. No error lights flashed so was pointless to bring it in to dealer.

Good luck and keep plugging away at gathering the data! Hyundai claims should give you a case # and follow through on that. I think my case picked up steam actually after calling them and less than 3-4 months later I got a rebuild.

Hi All!

I am new to the forum. I have a deposit on a 2012 RSpec and am scheduled to pick it up in Miami in 2 weeks. Is there a way to tell if my engine is an affected engine with oil consumption problems (This question may have been asked and answered in this thread but I don't have a ton of time to read through the 600+ posts)? Thanks

Check the service history, then check the oil level upon delivery and then every 400 miles (or one tank of gas).
