Recall/Free Tire Replacement???

The early model Genesis Base Trim models (Generation 1 starting in 2009) with 17" wheels had H rated tires. They may have continued that through 2013, but I am not sure (2014 Base Trim had 18" wheels).

I have never driven my Genesis above 90 MPH, so I don't really care about speed rating per se. V rated tires have slightly better handling than H rated (stiffer sidewalls), but my early model Genesis has a pretty stiff suspension to begin with, so my H rated tires are fine for me.

Ok... Thanks. Yea, H also seem to last longer too.. However, I support the "outrage" listed in the comment and comment letter text. IMO. He has good points.

The MXM4 tires are also made by Michelin in a V speed rating. From looking at the prices on the Discount Tire site, they are about the same price as the H rating. As your dealer has to order the tires from his tire distributor, not Hyundai, why not ask him to order the V rating for you? If the tires cost a few dollars more, offer to pay the difference.

After all, Hyundai is offering you a free set of tires to replace OEM tires that are not defective. I can't imagine any other manufacturer doing this.

Now there is idea.. Get V rated version, and not have them do the CPU change. Compromise that works? IF Hyundai would allow it.. Even for a small up charge. Still different tire design than stock on car now. I would be the most cranked about the top speed change. Might put up with a "better " all season Michelin for free at same speed rating... Maybe.

For a car whose one generally universal knock when compared to it's target competitors is it's weight and lack of sportiness, a sudden change in OEM tire to one which likely exasperates that deficiency, seems ill-conceived. I was originally under the assumption that a batch of those Hankook tires were defective, as a way to explain this expensive and unusual change. That seems unlikely based on what we keep hearing in Hyundai PR and it appears the silent majority was overruled by those who wanted an even softer car and are excited by a tire brand name they recognize. Tires are a huge influence on a cars ride and much usually goes into dialing in the right tire. In this case, maybe not so much.

It still does not add up. For many, free tires is all they need to hear, but this still seems like a strange decision if based on a "small minority" of feedback on tire noise from a tire whose noise rating is less than its replacement.

No one is suggesting the car is in that class, nor expect so. The OEM Hankooks were not super high performance summer tires, they were an all season performance tire selected for the car after extensive testing, including with Lotus. For a car a bit lazy already due to weight, downgrading the performance of the tire just seems backwards and a knee jerk reaction after purported minimal complaints about noise.

I doubt that you will ever know the real reason for the replacements.

BUT - lawsuits involving tires and companies with deep pockets typically run in the millions of dollars - and juries don't mind handing it out. The lawsuits are not well publicized, but Costco, Walmart, and Michelin are a few names that come to mind.

Yea... Somewhere around here someone posted pic of a Hankook tire that came apart. Could have been crappy allignment out if the factory (see various continued post on this), or defective tire (which there Might be more.. Total speculation on my part.. Your logic about legal issues hold water historically in general... Mine have severe flat spots after sitting... AND rears were Impossible to road force balance in spec.. One of the best R/F guys in town spent couple hours trying. For those who know R/F system, it is a tedious method to get a real perfect balance. In my case, will likely make the change prior than needed just because of the highway slight but annoying vibration due to bad tire (and also possible factory out of balance wheel in the other side).

I saw one post of a Hankook blowout, and someone who had a few miles on Hankooks said the vibration got so bad that the whole car shook. Go figure.

That makes the tire ratings on TireRack.com for those particular tires highly questionable.

are you sure you aren't confusing car mag reviews with actual marketing and advertising. i don't recall any advertisement mentioning lotus, but i could very well be wrong. plus, just because lotus was utilized to sort out the genesis' suspension doesn't automatically mean the idea was to create a sports car. lotus was utilized to tailor the genesis ride/driving dynamics to american tastes. and apparently lotus' expertise in suspensions is or will also be used on other hyundai vehicles for the american market.

I think you are absolutely correct. Lotus was called in not to make the new car a hard core sport sedan but how to best address the all the things that are important to a good luxury car.

And, interestingly, Lotus felt the tires that a minority seems to have issues with were the best tire for the car...

In the interviews, spin room up to and after lotus was referenced many times.. Plus, I remember the presentation team bringing it up as the car was introduced. I bet there are printed ads outside of PR packets handed to auto media.

i don't doubt what you wrote (heck i've seen lotus mentioned several times alone in car and driver when they review the genesis...but i think people are mistaking PR to magazines and what not VS actual advertising to customers/consumers.

They are taking a car that was sold with High Performance All Season Tires with a 150mph limit, and replacing those tires with Grand Touring All Season Tires and reducing the top speed to 130mph.

Now I understand that the car should NEVER be driven that speed, BUT the tires should have been replaced with tires of EQUAL speed rating and tire category..since that is what I paid for.

The tires on the 2009-2011 Genesis were far worse than the Hankook's, and they weren't replaced by Hyundai. No one is forcing you to have the Hankook's replaced.

I never said I was being forced to change them did i? The point is the tires are defective, and they should be replaced with EQUAL tires. Maybe you dont have a problem with this, but I do, and I am sure many other people do. Thats my right and my opinion.
