2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

Does NHTSA require red turn signals?
No. At one time I believe that some Euopean countries required amber, but not sure about current regulations.

Here is an interesting link from 2009, but not sure if it is up-to-date on current regulations:

"Some cars have red turn signal lamps, while others have an amber hue. Big deal, right? The National Highway Traffic Safety Association thinks it is, after finding that amber lights are 5.3% more effective at preventing crashes than the red blinkers. NHTSA came to that conclusion after comparing crash data of vehicles that switched from one color to another. Europe already mandates the amber turn signal, and NHTSA says that data from other agencies supports their findings. As it is, American cars sold in Europe already receive legal turn signal units – even if they aren't sold that way in America (see Chevrolet's C6 Corvette as an example).

NHTSA is now asking the public whether it should mandate amber turn signals for all vehicles sold in the States. Unfortunately for automakers, amber turn signals aren't exactly high fashion here in the U.S., as the vast majority of the signals are of the red blinking variety, likely because of cost considerations. While it's true that the auto industry is probably suffering from a case of far too many regulations, anything that can improve safety by up to 5.3% without costing an arm and a leg is probably worth considering. If NHTSA gives automakers a reasonable amount of time to implement the changes, automakers may be able to fit the change into the next design cycle."
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/02/report-nhtsa-to-mandate-amber-turn-signals/

Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
"A 2008 U.S. study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests vehicles with amber rear signals rather than red ones are up to 28% less likely to be involved in certain kinds of collisions, and a 2009 NHTSA study determined there is a significant overall safety benefit to amber rather than red rear turn signals."

I agree that amber color plastic is not good looking on a rear tail light, but almost all newer cars can project an amber light from a white plastic tail light (like on the current Genesis). Basically it all about fashion trends, like the current craze for Rocky-Raccoon eyeglasses.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

Front end is a blend between a Volvo, Audi, and maybe a little bit Chrysler 300. I think they nailed the back end, IMHO.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

I have a suspicion these are stale, pre-release Kia K9/Quoris shots. Many of the lines are just too similar.

Kia K9/Quoris

Altho this confusion has been settled, don't see why there was any confusion in the 1st place since the 2 have pretty much completely different greenhouses (esp. the C-pillar/real window panel).

Hmm

Compare the K9 rear with genesis Spyshot: Same muffler look, rear lights, etc - who really knows lol

Even w/ the cladding, one can tell that the taillights have a different shape and even the integrated tailpipes are shaped a bit differently (even tho there really isn't much one can do w/ those design-wise).

So yeah, there is no other South Korean auto manufacture with the resources capable of producing a vehicle such as the Genesis...

Granted, it's really a foreign automaker, but Renault Samsung has the resources.

Don't take away my MB grille!

lol...from benz to audi

Also if you look at the picture...you can see the poor photoshop job in hood with the wing emblems lololol

The whole Genesis comparison to MB was way overplayed.

The only thing the Genesis had in common w/ any Benz is a grill w/ a center divider; the rest of the Genesis, in particular the greenhouse w/ the Hofmeister kink, was much more BMW so if anything, comparisons to BMW were more on point.

And speaking of grills, luxury grills traditionally had vertical or horizontal slatted grills (Lexus, Infiniti, Acura - all did this as well).

Take a look at the grill of the pre-refreshed LS460 - slap on a center divider and the grill become a "Benz grill" (btw, Nissan did do that w/ its luxury models in Japan).

The Genesis grill has a clearly diff. center divider as well as grill slats so it is quite distinguishable from the MB grill (now, the greenhouse w/ the Hofmeister kink - not so much).

Now, the reference to Audi, that I can really see (more down below).

The profile shots of this remind me of a BMW 7-Series.

Greenhouse is totally diff.; the LS460 and the Acura RLX have more of a 7 Series greenhouse w/ the Hofmeister kink.

Yeah, that rear 3/4 window area is where this new one loses me. I'm sure the rest will look good but it just screams Sonata/Azera to me rather than keeping the Genesis's DNA separated from the rest of the Hyundai lineup...

Agreed.

While in one manner, the greenhouse does look sleeker due to the lower roofline and higher beltline (cutting the amount of glass); the problem is the shape of the C-pillar/rear window panel.

It has that gradual elongation that is too reminiscent of the old Azera, the old Infiniti M and even the greenhouse on the Equus (none of which I have liked) - giving the overall look one that is soft rather than "aggressive" as has been touted by Hyundai execs.

To me, the shape of the greenhouse on the Quoris is better.

Well if it retained the current cars BMW "hofmeister kink" people would still complain if not more. I actually like this new ones rear doors better as they look more upscale to me but that's just my opinion.

Well, that would likely be true; funny tho, how other automakers don't get anywhere close to the level of criticism for using the Hofmeister kink (not that BMW originated it) - such as Lexus on the LS and GS, Infiniti on the G, Acura on the RLX and probably the TLX (also use it on the Accord), Volvo, VW, etc.

New grille looks like it could be very similar to the Quoris, which is a carbon-copy of the 7-series, only more catfish-like. Hope I'm wrong, I HATE the Quoris front end.

The Quoris really doesn't look like the 7 Series - mostly due to the different greenhouse (the LS460 and RLX have more of a 7 Series greenhouse).

Now, up front is where people make the most comparisons, but that's not even close either.

Of all the BMW models, the front of the Quoris has a passing resemblance to the 5 Series GT, but that's mostly b/c the Quoris has vertical slatted grills (the shape of the grill and headlights are quite diff.).

Now having said that, I do have my issues w/ the front of the Quoris regarding the shape of the headlights and the overall shape of the grill (exacerbated by using vertical grill slats).

Peter Schreyer and Co. did a better job w/ the refreshed front fascia of the K7/Cadenza.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqEEym0edgY"]2013 Kia K7 ( 2013 Kia Cadenza) First Drive - YouTube[/ame]

If I had my way, I would take the front of the Cadenza and attach it to the side/greenhouse and rear of the Kia GT concept.

I like the tail lights...looks too similar to the sonata? but the front grill....not my taste

Agreed - based on the rendering looks too much like the taillights on the Sonata (and now the Lexus GS).

2014HyundaiDH_01_zpsf6789fd7.jpg

OK - the front here totally screams Audi to me (did Peter Schreyer move from Kia to Hyundai?) - the headlights (while a bit diff. from the typical Audi headlights) look like something that could have come out from the Audi design studio.

I hope Hyundai designers kept the "S" shape for the coated LED running lights that are on the Genesis (as well as on the i40) since that is a great look (Audi, actually now uses a softer version of that "S" shape on a couple of their models).

But it's basically the oversized grill w/ the horizontal slats that really makes the front look like Audi (ironically, Audi started to use the hexagon shape which Hyundai originated for some of its grills and if Hyundai uses a toned down version of that shape, it really will look like a couple of Audi models).

The front end also reminds me of what Peugeot seems to be planning on doing based on some of their recent concept models.

If the rendering is accurate - be prepared for cries of "copying Audi."

Based on the other post, Ricky Lao stated that the Genesis was going to look "distinctive," but I don't see it (Audi front, generic side/greenhouse and Sonata rear).

2014HyundaiDH_02_zpsb995703a.jpg

These computer generated renderings tend to be unflattering, but I'm really disliking the greenhouse here.

Hopefully the finished product actually does look more distinctive and if not, let's hope that Hyundai does wonders w/ the design of the interior/dash.

I said profile not greenhouse. Profile is made up of more than the greenhouse. My comparison to the 7-Sieries comes from the long engine bay and the upright frontal area. ;)

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

The original Genesis prototype tried to maintain some legacy Hyundai style elements, but that was a disaster and was scrapped at the last minute, and Hyundai copied MB (front) and BMW (rear) for the first Genesis. That turned out to be a very wise and successful decision, so I don't expect to see any completely original designs in the next generation of Genesis. The risk is too high.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

This review helps to illustrate my viewpoint on Genesis styling. The current Genesis echoes the Benz E-class with some BMW and Lexus hints. The photos we've seen of the next generation Genesis parrot the current Howdy A6 and family. I'd prefer to stay with the former group, not Howdy.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

Those wheels are butt-ugly, even on the real photos of the camouflaged Genesis. They are non-symmetrical, which typically only appeals to lower-class buyers. I sure hope they don't go those wheels for the production version.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

read through the whole thing and nobody really spent time on the tranny/power train combo.

I spent some time in a 2013 Sonata 2.0T and instant torque in any gear is a huge plus vs 8 speeds and 333hp in my current car.

I think the tranny is more important to me vs new Genny copying Audi or BMW/MB.

As long as it's got a turbo and a good tranny, I'm game.

A good tranny is fine and all, but being able to keep the nanny in check is even more important. I hate the one on the 8-speed - hopefully we get some options with the 10-speed (which I don't see a real need for, mind you).

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

Nanny shouldn't be a problem with AWD sending power to all wheels, but the 2 second downshift time...that's a problem.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

looks promising, kinda like a bigger azera with a snouty european style grille.

Hyundai is understanding that this is what the market wants in the up market segment, a snouty bold grille.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

I don't have issues with the wheels on this car- a large improvement to the stock R-Spec wheels that mirror Hybrid flush units. Hoping to get staggered wheels- why on Equus and not on Genesis?

I had neutral feeling for the stock R-Spec wheels but compare to the one in the spy photo it makes it look premium wheels. If that wheel makes it to the new Genesis I hope it's for the base model cause I don't like it one bit.

Anyone seen any photos of the interior?

Google Maps And Places Are Coming To Hyundai’s And Kia’s Telematics Platforms

http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/02/go...ng-to-hyundais-and-kias-telematics-platforms/

Quote from the link:
The system will feature Google’s Send2Car feature, which allows users to send POIs and other destinations from Google Maps on their smartphones directly to their cars.

While I imagine this is good news, my car already has similar functionality via Hyundai's Bluelink app. It's a really useful feature of Bluelink IMO and find address searching to be much easier by phone typing than using the car's non-touch screen methods. The big plus about the announcement will be the elimination of annoyances related to obsolete on-board map data and Hyundai's costly updates (future users will be able to blame only Google for obsolete map/POI data). I wonder if they'll be able and willing to push what would probably be just a software revision to use Google maps primarily to existing Bluelink equipped vehicles.

Re: 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Spy Photos

Looking at the new 2014 Equus I can't help but see similarities with Kia Quoris (K9). With few differences like the grill and other minor style difference it looks like the same car.

Going by this I think we could assume that new Genesis will have a lot of the similar styles as the newly revealed Kia Cardenza (K7)

Also it looks like Hyundai is going with the vertical grill. I'm seeing this in the newly redesigned Azera and Equus so I think we'll see this in the new Genesis as well (I believe someone already stated that grill in the spy shot may be fake). If true I don't think I like this and maybe another reason for me to consider 2013 R-Spec.
