2015/2016 Generation Genesis "Dislikes"

Bought a 2015 Genesis Ultimate with about 9k on it one year ago.

It's an ULTIMATE piece of garbage and actually quite dangerous.
It's being towed in right now for the 3rd time in 60 days.
1. Wiring...electronic steering failed (my 60 year old wife was stuck with it and it's like steering an 18 wheeler without assisted steering)
2. Sunroof stuck in open...had to leave it for 5 days for new racks
3. Lane Assist failure and steering locked and it's being towed again right now (the steering locked along with all the sensor failures)

This vehicle is a financial disaster for me; a lemming and actually extremely dangerous to drive given it's propensity for steering fail/lockup. After I get it out of Hyundai this time, I will likely sell the car...had it less than one year; however, my wife is afraid to drive it and frankly, I can not trust it.

Sorry to hear that. That is unacceptable for a car this low miles (was it a dealer service loaner?).
Assuming that 2015 the car was put in service in late 2014 or in 2015, when you bought it a year ago (late 16; early 17), it should be (or have been) under factory warranty...for at least some time after you bought it. Did the Dealer not fix the issues, and has a history of these in their system?
Was this a CPO with proper warranty? Did your selling source get these issues addressed?

I have a 2015 5.0, but not an Ultimate, bought new in May 2015, and it now has 29K miles, and there have been no major issues, but have had a battery failure that was fixed under warranty. Also, I did spring for the Hyundai Extended Warranty w/ no deductible....will see if/how that works after my 3 yrs initial warranty is over.

Yep, and put the park brake on, it's the way we do it in the UK, no sense in shagging your torque convertor
and buggering up your brake discs. :)

Interesting, the Chinese do it too, I've never done it and never had a problem. I think maybe that's why your auto hold function don't work properly in N.

I recently read some articles about doing that. No great consensus or proof of damage, but there certainly is no gain to be had. The tranny is made to sit and idle in gear. Shifting back and forth, in nothing else, puts wear on the linkage. You also stress the drivetrain a bit when you unload and load it many times.

One of my favorite features of the Genesis is the "Auto Hold" I use it a lot in traffic and makes much more sense than shifting to Neutral. In all my years of driving, I don't know of anyone that had problems from having the car idle in gear at stoplights.

If you are hit from behind at an intersection you will go flying through it possibly into oncoming traffic if you are in neutral. I was always told to leave it in gear. Auto Hold makes that easy. No creep.

Yes, interesting, you may be right, it's a habit from way back, a stationary car that's in Neutral or Park is a safe car, a stationary
car in Drive has the potential for danger.

Not a week goes by without a TV news item about some dope who run themselves over or pins them to a wall with their own car.

Somewhat true. Auto regulations say you have to have your foot on the brake to shift out of Park. That was not the case years ago. My father had his '55 Chevy parked in the driveway in front of the garage. There was a bit of an incline. I got in the car to get something and knocked the shift lever out of P and the car rolled forward about 10 feet. My brother was there washing an outboard motor we used earlier that day. Fortunately, the motor was wider than my brother so he was not crushed against the garage door.

When dropping off or picking up someone I'm very careful to put the car in Park as a safety measure as people have been injured by a food slipped off the brake. One of my favorite features of the Genesis is the Auto Hold. No need to keep your foot on the brake at a long stop. No need to shift in and out of gear thousands of times over the life of the car.

2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 l V8 Sedan Headlight Cover Damage. I picked up a rock on the left front (drivers side) headlight cover while traveling at speed on the I 35. The rock shattered the plastic cover but did no discernible damage to the lights themselves. Na worries. Simply replace the plastic cover, $50-100 max. Guess again, Genesis lovers. The final bill for me and my insurance company was closer to $2000. The headlight assembly must be replaced as one unit. In order to replace the headlight assembly, the front bumber must be removed to get to two screws holding the headlight in place, from underneath. Lesson learned: When traveling 70 mph-plus behind that gravel truck, you might want to consider backing off a couple hundred feet or so. This Hyundai design flaw will undoubtedly cause an increase in the cost of insuring the Genesis once it becomes more apparent.

BTW, I love the Genesis. The naturally aspirated engine and the 8-speed trans are a divine mating of the motoring gods. The bells and whistles and doo-dads that are standard, cost bezillions on Bimmers, Mercs and Audis; even Lexii ad Infinitum. When you do the comparative math of cost vs performance the Genesis wins every time. Cooled seats in Texas during the Summer. What's not to love? JSJ

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

If you hold the trunk button on lower left of dash from the driver's seat it will close itself but you have to hold it till it closes fully. If that's what you mean.

Is this only I the Ultimate package? Doesn't seem to work on my 2016 Genesis 3.8 with Tech Package.

I don't have many gripes about the car but man, the cup holder situation is absolutely abysmal!!! Would it have been that difficult to make both cup holders in the front the same size as the larger of the two? The smaller one is almost useless!

I'm a new-to-me 2015 Genesis owner with Signature package and loving it so far. Have owned it for about 6 weeks now and my largest grievance is pretty minor. I use the "touch" turn signal feature extremely often, and I've found the detent between this feature and full-on locked turn signal is not sufficient enough. I'll often try to tap the shifter arm to signal and it either won't engage or I hit it too hard and it goes into the locked-on mode.

Again, minor annoyance, but if we're splitting hairs...

14 speaker system could be better, but it's sufficient. Much better than the Dynaudio system that was in my '08 Touareg.

A major gripe in many Genesis reviews is the lack of bass response from this multi speaker system.

I must agree, the big speaker on the centre of the back shelf doesn't really pump anything much out at all.

Never had that issue with the turn signal stalk, maybe yours have an issue my is very noticeable when in momentary mode or in the detent.

I haven't had that issue either, but frankly I wish the "touch" turn signal wasn't even there. I prefer to just turn it on or off. The first time I engaged the "touch" signal I though something was broken since the turn signal flashed a few times and then went off by itself.

Another dislike I'd add is the windshield wiper functions. The AUTO setting always ends up going way too fast so the speed selector tab ends up being pointless. Just let me select the speed of the wipers and leave it there like every other car on the planet!!!

The touch 3 blink has been around for at least eight years. I first saw it on a Citroen I rented in Italy. Not sure if it is a Federal mandate or not. You can also set the blinks for 3, 5, or 7.

As for the wipers, it is a feature expected on cars today. That also have been around for about 20 years. It did take a few rainstorms for me to find a good setting, but now I never touch it. I quite like that it speeds up as either you speed up or the rain gets harder. Not sure why yours is going to fast. I can set mine to hardly wipe at all. If you can't, get it checked.

I'm with Ed, didn't care for any of the auto features until this car either I'm lazy or getting old.

I'm getting older AND I don't car for either of them :).

I never feel like there's a time where I need to signal exactly 3, 5, or 7 times. And the difference between using the touch blink and just turning on the signal is so minimal that it just feels unnecessary. The Auto wipers annoy me because they always seem to go too fast when there's not that much rain which makes for a noisier ride. I wish they'd just let me adjust the variable speed.

I like that 3 blinks quite a bit, I do agree on the wipers while its helpful it never seems to be at a good speed.

FWIW, I did a little experiment in a left turning lane. There was an individual ahead of me with their turn signal on. It was a pretty long turning lane, maybe 150-200 feet. The light is terribly short and may give way for 5-7 cars, at most, to turn. I sat behind this individual, obviously, the whole time and counted 221 "signals" while waiting and after it shut off after the turn was made. I use my auto blinker feature when I move into that lane (3 step) and when I am making the turn.

Me - 6 blinks
Other - 221 blinks.

Traditional bulbs will last you about 5 to 6 years. Our LEDS may last up to 10 years. I used my blinker 98% less than that individual. Looking up costs, a turn signal replacement repair will be from $50-$150. Therefore, you can save about two trips to the dealership and $100-$300 throughtout the life of your car. Yes, I know, I have way too much time when I sit in the car and drive. Still, an experiment I thought I'd share. Before you slam me for not signaling, I do when I make maneuvers, not when I am 10th in line sitting in a TURNING lane; it's a waste of energy.
