If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So! What do you think? This is a tough call. I'm going to GUESS that "Genesis" wants the G80 to use the twin turbo V6. It'll have plenty of power and this will leave the G90 with a more powerful engine option. However, in a "best foot forward" introduction - would the V8 be a better idea? Some will say "yes" because luxury should hold an image of power. Others will say "no" saying it looks more "responsible" using the engine that'll use less gas.

What's your opinion? I'd love to know...

I assume you mean that the G80 will have both the 3.8 V6 and the 3.3 V6 TT?

I'm asking what people think will be the top engine option. The 3.3 liter twin turbo V6 or the 5.0 liter V8...

if the G80 is supposed to compete with the mid sized germans
they will need a V8 option...perhaps even a high performance V8 option

Looking at the MB website for 2016 E class, they no longer have an E550 V8 in the USA market. It seems to have been replaced by the E400 V6 3.0L Biturbo. There is the E63 AMG with V8 Biturbo, but it starts at $101,700.

One by one all the luxury brands are leaving their V8s behind in the midsize class. Lexus. Cadillac. Mercedes. I'm sure BMW and others will follow. The Genesis G80 doesn't "need" a V8 because the twin turbo V6 will suffice. However, Genesis Motors may want to play it as the company raising the bar - where everyone else is giving up the V8 - they're still giving customers what they want. BUT... How many customers? Perhaps not enough to matter. Or perhaps it's just for bragging rights? "We still have a V8". But how many people will say, "Look at this dinosaur still selling a gas guzzling V8". There's a lot to consider and I'm not sure there's truly a "correct way" of moving forward. No matter what they do - they will not please everyone.

I would absolutely love a TT v6. The 5.0 is a wonderful engine but the efficiency gained and the tuning possibilities would have my vote going for the TTv6. Obviously I am thinking from a more performance and aftermarket based platform and the OEMs would consider this but hey, its just my .02

I'm with you. I'd take the TT V6 for it's tuning potential. The 5.0 is pretty much "what it is" - "and that's it". What - intake? Exhaust? No.

In any event - the Genesis Motors website states the G80 will be available with the 3.8 liter V6 and the 5.0 liter V8. I'm not entirely sure I believe that - but it's certainly a possibility. Especially if the 2017 Genesis G80 is exactly the same car as the 2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan (without a refresh). I JUST don't think it's a good idea to introduce the G80 with no TT V6 and then suddenly, after only one year on the market, change the style and add a new engine option. That would piss off a lot of "first year" buyers...

And I seriously doubt Genesis Motors will wait an ADDITIONAL three years for the redesign to bring the TT V6 into the G80. That would just be a stupid move.

I'm in favor of the V6TT as well but mostly for the tuning possibilities. As of right now, even the 5.0L would get it's doors blown off by a Cadillac CTS Vsport because of the huge torque advantage and significantly lower weight. I know not many owners drag race their Genesii, but I've been through nearly every video review of both vehicles and the common thread is the CTS Vsport is an excellent handling machine. Genesis needs to lose some weight, but only way to do that is go aluminum, driving up the price and losing the value component they have the market cornered on. Tough call!

that is an an apples and oranges comparison
the CTS-V is almost 3X the price and built to be more of a street race car
there is a lot more to that car that just its high output engine

I dont think Hyundai is going after that market

After talking with some folks who were working with HMA recently, I'm starting to feel pretty sure that the 2017 G80 will just be a rebadged 2016 and that the midcycle refresh will be the 2018, at which point we'll see a 3.3 TT variant and other changes. This is further supported by this at the Detroit show:

While this makes sense to me I have a hard time seeing this being the case. If anything I think Hyundai will push back the mid cycle update a couple of years. Think about it as a first time buyer of the Genesis, if this happened you would buy a 2017 Genesis G80 and the very next year its redesigned/refreshed. You would be majorly pissed. And I doubt that's what Hyundai wants from people trying their luxury brand for the first time. I could see the 2019 being the first year with the refresh and it would come out mid-year 2018. That still wouldn't make people who buy a 2017 very happy but at least it would be more than just one year.

Could be - we'll see, I guess? 2016 buyers might already be pissed as those cars did not show up until November and will already be replaced by this summer - So less than a year!!

I don't think you read my post correctly. I said CTS Vsport, not the full V.

The Cadillac V-Sport uses a twin turbo V6. The Cadillac CTS-V uses a supercharged V8 - and is much faster...

Cadillac is making some very nice product, too bad their infotainment system is garbage. Really need to dump Cue already.

This is true, though if you're buying a 16 now you know that the Genesis brand is coming out soon and that the Genesis will soon be called the G80. While if you buy a 2017 G80 I doubt you'll know that there's a refresh in a year if that happened.

I really hope my guess is what happens since that means we'd have the current style Genesis/G80 for a few more years!

Refreshes are usually after 3 years, and rarely delayed beyond that. A refresh almost always includes revised tail lights, plus whatever else they think is important to fix and have to time to do.

I still think there is an outside chance that the 2017 G80 will have new tail lights, since it is a simple change to make. But I am not putting any money on it. If so, then Nikgen will have to buy yet another Genesis, for three straight model years in a row (or maybe he can just install the new tail lights, and rebadge his 2016).
