TUTORIAL: 2015 Genesis trunklid KDM "Wings" Emblem installation

It would seem that the new Genesis badge will be debuting soon on the EQ900 (formerly Equus) in Korea. At some point, some older Genesis owners may want to upgrade to the newer look. I wouldn't be in a big rush to remove any '15 H trunk badges until I see what the new wings look like.

I "cheated" and since my wife's Veracruz needed some work done I drove her there in the Genesis and asked if they would replace the H with the wings I picked up. They washed the car, replaced the H and took off the dealer sticker for no cost. Very happy with the service and result.

I have had my 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD sedan in Parisian Grey for almost 2 weeks and it is truly a wonderful car.

As soon as I signed the contract with the dealer, I ordered the Genesis Wing badge for the trunk lid. It arrived yesterday and I replaced the flying H with the Wing badge as well as removing the GENESIS lettering. I did not think it would look right to have both the badge, which says Genesis, and the lettering, as it would imply the car was a Genesis Genesis (also an album from 1983). I also removed the "3.8" and the "HTRAC" badging as well.

It looks fantastic. Clean and sophisticated.

It was quite easy to do. I used a hair blower to heat the badge while using dental floss (double stringed), starting at one edge and gently moving it up and down and towards the middle, always pulling the floss towards me to not scratch the paint underneath. Remember that the H has pegs so you will have to stop when you get to them (from each side). Then do the same procedure from the top down (to the pegs) and from the bottom up (to the pegs).

The H took a little more time, but the GENESIS lettering, and the 3.8 and HTRAC badges, were much easier to remove and took no time at all. After removing them, I coated the glue residue with Goo Gone, let it soak in, and gently peeled the thick glue residue away. I had to repeat this step a few times, but eventually, it was all removed.

I then used a paint cleaner to remove any residue and swirl marks caused by the glue removal.

To place the Wing badge, use painters tape to mark off where the badge should be placed before removing the peel off the back of the badge. It takes just a few measurements with a ruler to find out how to center the badge. Use a ruler instead of a bubble leveler as most level surfaces are not that level. The important measurements you will need are the distance between the two peg holes and the maximum width at the center of the badge. Use tape strips to mark off where the center top tip of the badge will go then tape it to the lid with painters tape (but not removing the back peel). After this, measure each wing tip the the bottom trunk edge. When both the left and right sides are equal, use the tape to outline the badge so you know where to place it once the back peel is removed.

I then treated the whole area to a coat of wax. The whole process took a little more than an hour and well worth the time.

I'll be doing the same this weekend. Mine came with the wings badge on the back from the dealership, one less thing to drop extra money on!

So there are no clips inside of trunk on flying H plastic pegs to remove?
I got my wings in today's mail, but didn't want to have to remove the trunk liner.

No need to remove the liner. The pegs on the flying H simply fit into holes in the truck. The Genesis emblem does not have any pegs.

I just ordered one for the back of the black/tan 2015 5.0 the wife and I bought today. It just so happened that, while we were at the dealer, someone in a Gen1 drove up with the wings on the truck. Much classier than the H.

Got the rear wings in yesterday and had time to remove the "flying H". Wings installed this morning. I like.

Now to go out and confuse even more people about what sort of car this is and who makes it.

The tips of my wings are 3.5" up from the edge of the trunk lid. I found this to be the flattest spot / most OEM looking to me.

I picked my car last week and I already noticed that they screwed that up! wings are too low and 8mm off from the center.

I guess, I'll have to do it myself, can't trust those "technicians" nowadays

Best to install in warmer temps...Adhesive takes about 2-3 days to cure

I know this is off subject but I cannot figure out how to ask a question any way else...I am considering buying 2015 Genesis ...does anybody have any info on expected resale values...Just looked at new magazine and saw that after 5 years the previous model only retained 41% of value and most of other luxury cars around 46-48% retained value...I was surprised and disappointed at the news....Any thoughts? ,,, Thanks
