TUTORIAL: 2015 Genesis trunklid KDM "Wings" Emblem installation

Hey, I look just like that guy above me! Oh yeah, because I'm a moron, and created two accounts when I got my second Genesis recently. Gee, no wonder I couldn't create an account with my preferred screen name

Anyway, and a related thread note, My "new" 2016 Genesis came with the wings pre-installed. I didn't even notice it until after I paid for it. I wonder is the prior (lease) owner did it, or if it's part of the CPO inspection/clean-up process to reinforce the Genesis brand. In any case, I'm pleased to say the lease. I'm even more happy that the dealer didn't even put a dealer badge or decal on the rear.

Decided to push on with wing badge swap today. The glue was super hard and wasn’t as easily removed as videos I had watched of the process. It did finally yield with Goo Gone and some elbow grease. Used string taped corner-to-corner to act as guidelines for final placement.

Ended up debaging the Genesis, 3.8 and HTRAC emblems while I was at. Genesis/Genesis duplication doesn't work for me and I have zero interest in adding G80 badging to a car that isn’t a G80. Really like the clean minimalist look - though a small bit of ghosting from the HTRAC emblem remains to be tackled later.

Weighted the ‘15/‘16 style wings vs. Genesis G80 chrome revision and simply perfer the matte to the chrome as to my eye the chrome wings look too plastachrome for my taste and I’m happy matching the hood wing style, which are also found on steering wheel, center wheel covers, infotainment splash screen and key fob.View attachment 16644
Just to clarify... re: the other 2 badges you removed without replacing them... were they held on just by adhesive (with no holes in the metal for tabs)?

Re-badged my trunk over the weekend following the tutorial here, went smoothly and took 40 minutes start to finish. Flossing through the original adhesive with fishing line took longer than I anticipated. I spaced mine 3.25" above the lid line at the outer wing tip for the badge to sit flush

Mine came in today so I'll do this tonight.

Funny story. My wife had a 2015 that came with the wings already on it. Someone wrecked it for her. So while we were shopping around online she was quick to point out she didn't want certain cars. She said they had an "H" on the back of them. I laughed. Then explained to her how things work. Ironically her next one had the wings already installed, too.

Got my wings on tonight. Boy, it sucks doing things like this when you're an OCD perfectionist about certain things (like decals and badges). Took me way longer than 30 minutes to get it just right. But it's all done now. Much better. Now I can actually pass the big boy cars and not be embarrassed. ;)

i lucked out and purchased a CPO 2015 that already had the wings on the back. I would have thought that was standard on these cars. It makes a huge difference in how the trunk looks with the H vs the wings.

Mine had holes behind the badge. It’s a 2015.

It wouldn't bother me to have a Hyundai brand logo on the car----but the flying H badge is simply a bad design, whereas the Genesis badge is a great one.

Get your Genesis emblem/badge HERE!

I know that there are already similar posts for the 1st gen Genesis trunk lid emblem swap but I thought I would create one for the 2nd gen (2015+) owners.

SUPPLIES:
  • KDM trunk lid emblem (Part No: 86330 B1000)
  • 20lb fishing line ($3 at WalMart)
  • 2 pieces of wooden dowel/pencils/plastic sticks
  • Blue painters tape
  • Goo Gone or WD40
  • Detailing spray
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Bubble/spirit level
  • Heat gun or hairdryer
  • Measuring tape
  • Dremel tool with cutting disc and grinding stone
  • Shop rags/microfiber cloths
TIME:
30 minutes

INTRO:

North American 2nd gen Genesis sedans come with the "Flying H" oval emblem on the trunk lid with the remainder of the badging being the Genesis "Wings" on the hood and elsewhere. However, in Korea, the Genesis are sold with the "Wings" emblem throughout including the trunk lid.

For those North American owners who want to convert their trunk lid badging to the "Wings" emblem it can be done by ordering the KDM part and some simple modification. Please note that the "Wings" emblem for the 2nd gen Genesis sedan is shaped differently than the emblem for the 1st gen Genesis sedan or coupe. Also the trunk lid emblem is smaller in size than the hood emblem. Also the emblems are aligned from the factory using plastic pegs and holes drilled into the trunk lid itself. Unfortunately, the hole spacing is different between the North American and KDM Genesis sedans so some modification will be needed to the KDM emblem prior to installation:

You can get the KDM 2nd gen Genesis "Wings" trunk lid emblem right here. Here's how mine looked when it arrived:

INSTRUCTIONS:

PREP:

Wash the car thoroughly OR wipe down the trunk lid with a clean microfiber cloth and detailing spray. Remove all surface dust from the area. Be careful to avoid introducing swirl marks into the paint.

Next assemble your emblem removal tool using the about 12-14 inches of fishing line and the two dowels. The dowels will act as handles and the line is what will cut through the adhesive on the trunk badge without scratching the paint. I used a black plastic yard stake cut into 4 inch pieces. I scored a shallow groove into the center of the handles using some utility scissors. The groove will make it easier to tie the fishing line on and prevent it from sliding up and down the dowel. I tied mine so that there was only 7-8 inches of fishing line between the two dowels for better control.

-------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 1:

First you will need to remove the plastic pegs from the back of the KDM "wings" emblem using a Dremel tool with cutting disc. I recommend covering the back with some masking tape to protect the factory adhesive. I found it easiest to cut a little on all 4 sides rather than to try to cut through all the way from just one side due to the slight angle of the cutting disc with respect to the emblem.

-------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 2:

Use the Dremel with grinding stone to gently sand down the peg stumps so that they are below the level of the factory adhesive. If the stump sticks out above the adhesive it will scratch your paint and may prevent the adhesive from making good contact with the car.

-------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 3:

Remove the existing "Flying H" emblem from the trunk lid. First use the low heat setting on a heat gun or the high setting on a hair dryer to heat up one side of the "Flying H" emblem. Using the heat gun it only took 10-15 seconds to become hot to the touch. It may take a little longer to heat with a hair dryer.

IMG_2923.jpg

-------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 4:

Gently pass the fishing line tool under one edge of the heated emblem and use a slight "sawing" motion to cut through the adhesive. If the adhesive has been heated enough it should cut through without much force.

You will be able to cut the adhesive down to the plastic peg which protrudes closer to the middle of the emblem

IMG_2924.jpg

-------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 5:

Repeat on the other half of the emblem and then bring the fishing line though the top and bottom edges as well. Now the "Flying H" emblem should come off easily. If you are still feeling resistance keep working all the way around with the fishing line.

-------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 6:

Now remove the chunks of adhesive left behind on the trunk lid gently using your fingernails. Do not use anything here that would scratch or gouge your paint.

For the adhesive residue left behind use some Goo Gone or WD40 applied to a shop rag to wipe down the area.

Worked great! thanks!

When my 2015 was in body shop to repair body damage I had them take off the Hyundai logo for me and I bought the wing from Amazon and stuck it on and it looks much better than the H logo imo.

I bought a Genesis wing from Amazon and then took the car in to a body shop down the street. They put it on at no charge and it looks so much better. I gave the receptionist a $20 to pay for the tech's lunch.

I still like mine but after a year or so I have noticed a little corrosion on the edges of the dark GENESIS part where it meets the silver part.

The hood emblem on my 2015 is really worn away, and since I need to replace it I thought I would replace it with the G80 era emblem. I found this one, which is supposed to fit the 2015/16 models on the hood without having to cut off the tabs. 2015-2018 Genesis Wing Hood Emblem (F243)

Is the KDM part for the G80 front is the same as one from Hyundai Shop one and would fit my 2015 hood? It's $20 cheaper on KDM but not sure it would fit like the one above. Genesis Wing Badges (All Generations)G80 2017+ Front

Does anyone have experience replacing with the G80 era emblems on the 15/16 models? Any issues/things to know other than what is outlined in the OP?

Does the 2017-2020 rear badge not work with the 2015-2016 holes for the emblem? Just curious why are people still buying third party instead of Genuine Genesis emblems from a local dealer?

Like others this will be my first mod for my 2016 Genesis Ultimate 5.0 :)

It’s a Gen2 sedan, right? Still a Hyundai Genesis 3.8 or 5.0. Rebadging the car as a G80 doesn’t really make it so.
What's the difference between a 2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2017 Genesis G80 other than badging?

A lot of the emblems bought off of the internet are made just as good as the OEM ones. In fact, a lot of them are OEM ones that were simply purchased from Korea for a fraction of the cost that they sell them for at Hyundai shops in the US. The one I bought was exactly the same as one I would have gotten from the dealership, but at about 1/3 the price.

Oh, and for the record, the 2015 Genesis is the same as the 2016, with a few minor differences like led turn signals instead of incandescent bulbs. In fact, Hyundai saw fit to put the Genesis emblem on the trunk for vehicles built later in the year, instead of the flying H. I'm not sure why people get butt hurt when they hear of people wanting to upgrade a simple trunk emblem that the factory did themselves anyway. It's still a Genesis. Nobody is trying to pass off a Sonata for one.

"On 4 November 2015, Hyundai officially separated Genesis into its own luxury division, Genesis Motor. The leap into a stand-alone, luxury brand came on the heels of marked success in the luxury market, paired with consumer demand for the Genesis name".

Thanks, makes sense I ordered mine from the site advertised here and received it as well, now waiting for a warmer weather to do this as it’s frigid cold here LoL

And yes I agree about this rebadging, we are basically fixing what Hyundai acknowledged to be their mistake in badging from 2017 model year 😁

Ideally they should have done it like a TSB/Recall 😜

So is there a "pure Genesis" engine cover - which I imagine would be from the 2017 G80, but I don't know - that will fit the 2015 sedan?

I can just get a little OCD about this stuff sometimes. I'd like to find an owner's manual case with the wings on it as well. :D
