2015/2016 Generation Genesis "Dislikes"

We usually have a decent long spell of nice weather in the fall and spring and I really enjoy using the pano roof so to worry that it could freeze up at any time is frustrating. My last freeze up happened on a nice sunny day but weather the next day was to be rainy. It was 4pm on a weekday when it happened and by sheer luck one of the dealers in town said if I rush over he could try to fix. They lubed it up and it finally worked. But I don't like worrying about things like this happening again.

I usually try to open & close mine a couple of times a month just to keep the grease spread out on everything. Hot weather tends to make the lube a little watery and flow away from where it's supposed to be.

I wanted the pano roof but not necessarily the sunroof. Rarely will I open one but I do like the big glass roof (as long as it stays in one piece). That said, the sunroof appears to work fine in my '15. If the sunroof opened up more I might use it but as it is now, when it's open I just don't get anything out of it since the opening just seems small. Maybe that's just because I'm used to a Jeep.

I never realized that the Genesis actually had simply a Pano Roof option, as that would have been preferable to myself. But the sunroof seems to be working well on my '16, yet I agree the opening seems smaller than I'd like and so will most likely not use it that often except on brisk spring and fall days.

I don't think there's an option there. I simply meant I'd have been happy with just the glass roof if it didn't have a sunroof.

Got it now. I believe many of us would prefer that.

I read this yesterday afternoon and saw the comment about Auto Headlight Switching. It also happened to rain on my drive home. I can attest to this feature not being equipped or enabled in my 2015 3.8 Ultimate. I would like that feature very much as I do often forget to activate the headlights while driving in the rain! I set normally leave them set on Auto and assume they will come on when they should.

Regarding the sensitivity or usability of the auto wipers I believe this is relevant to many cars with this feature. A previous car I owned had rain sensing wipers that were completely unusable. They would sometimes not come on, but most of the time they would activate at full speed when only light mist would be present regardless of the sensitivity setting. I hated how poorly they functioned in that car. And not being able to override them with a manually inputted time delay wipe function was the worst part. The car you saw on the road with the wipers on low speed in very light rain was me! It was terribly annoying. My Genesis wipers have performed much better so far but I too have noticed some so far minor inconsistencies with the performance. For those dealing with poorly performing auto wipers I totally feel your pain! After my experience I will prefer the old school adjustable time delay controlled wipers. Our other vehicle's wipers operate this way and I have never once thought it was inconvenient or inferior when driving in the rain. Likewise I also have never thought how great it was to not have to extend my finger a few inches to activate a wiper switch when it starts raining.

I have the same issue with the wipers working intermittently while set to auto. My 2010 worked flawlessly. My 2016 is hit or miss and its irritating as heck. When I'm at the dealer next I'll have them check it out. They just straight fail to work at times. Like someone else mentioned, the windshield will at times be completely soaked and hard to see through and I'll need to activate them manually. Other times they're operating perfectly. I have a hard time believing the Zaino om the windshield is causing this, but I'll check it out.

Yes, it can affect the operation. It affects how the water is seen by the sensors. Clean it off the sensor area and see if it makes a difference.

Dislikes:
1: non stop creaking panoramic roof
2: cup holders. Cannot fit 2 small insulated cups. Only one. Holds cans crooked. Who designed this?
3: vibration at 26 to 29mph
4: recurrent musty smell from AC

A few things I've noticed in other, less luxurious cars that the Genny doesn't have [ maybe the G80 has them now].

1.No oil, transmission fluid, coolant temp readout, nor voltage readout.

2.The fuel tank " miles to go " number doesn't vary no matter if you are cruising at 60mph or accelerating up a mountain.

The miles to go is a long range calculation based on fuel level and distance gone since last fill up. I'd not expect it to change because you are making a change for a mile or so. It is still looking at the overall average. If you traveled 100 miles so far and the mountain road is one mile, the overall effect is minimal and eventually you may go down the other side to boost the average.

You do have a readout that gives the instant MPG and that will change on the mountain.

First off, I love the car and plan on buying one once it becomes more of a buyer's market. I could write more than most would want to read on what I liked. Having said that, there were a few small things that I thought could have been better.

1. Rear view visibility. The sight lines out the back were very limited.

2. Hood rigidity near the windshield. I drove a black 3.8 Tech AWD on a sunny day and the reflection off the flapping trailing edge of the hood got really annoying. I'm a tall guy (6'5") so maybe it is below the view of most drivers, but it was annoying to me. Afterward, I popped the hood to take a look. The reinforcing ribs on the inside of most hoods (that provide rigidity) were only present in the front corners. As a result, the rest of it is considerably floppy. I plan to test drive another color as I expect Black on a sunny day was the worst case scenario.

3. Throttle response*. The asterisk is because my drive was limited and I only squashed the gas a few times, but when I did, it seemed like there was a deliberate delay before the acceleration came on. The acceleration seemed fine, though. Maybe this is something that improves or goes away as the computer learns my driving style? Hope so...

4. Not so much a dislike as a concern. The under body panels are not made of typical plastic. Instead, they look like some sort of pressed non-woven material. I'm guessing it is for sound dampening and I'm sure it was tested, but the materials engineer in me isn't buying the long-term durability.

I drove a 2016 3.8 + Ultimate and Tech last night. One of the most important things for me was the audio system. I loved, loved, loved it in my 2009 4.6 (Lexicon 17 speaker). But, the 2016 audio, despite being 'the same' system, was seriously unimpressive. Yes, I checked audio settings.

Anybody have a theory on 1st gen Lexicon vs. 2nd Gen Lexicon?

2015 3.8 Ultimate here. Absolutely love the car and the way it rides but hate the vibrations that come through at idle in Drive. Techron and STP seems to help a little bit, but doesn't completely fix the issue.

I have the 2015 (14 speakers) and also drove the 2009 for a while and it had the top end audio system and the 2009 has a MUCH bigger center rear deck sub vs. the toy sized 6" "sub" my 2015 has.

Did my first oil change today. Really disappointed! Had to remove front and partial back cover to get filter housing and oil drain plug out. Took longer getting all the bolts off compare to oil change. I get it.. I will bring it to the dealership going forward. GeeZ

After living with my 2015 5.0 for a little while I'd say my biggest gripes are:
1. The padding on the center console is too hard. My RAM really spoiled me with its large pillow soft armrest. Door armrest could use some more padding as well, but it's a sight better than my RAM.
2. Trunk struts are totally shot and don't open the trunk more than a crack. I suspect I could replace them, but that takes time and money.
3. Only 4 cup holders?! And one of them hardly counts as a cup holder. Again, my RAM spoiled me with 6 in the front. They could have at least added bottle holders in the door pockets, my 2010 Kia Forte had them!
4. Everything LED or HID but not the DRL/turn signals.
5. Only two 12V outlets. And one USB. You know how often I use a cigarette lighter to power something? Rarely. One would be enough with some more USB ports. I know it's from 2015, but still, everybody had USB everything even then.
6. Dash info center could have more info given. Oil temperature would be nice.
7. Staggered tires. I know why, but it's a bit annoying. 275 width Sumitomo HTR Z3's hook up great, even in rain. Annoyingly more expensive than my large 3/4 ton truck tires.
8. Crumb trap thigh extension. Rolling extensions would be nicer, but gotta cut costs somewhere...

Other than that, I LOVE my car! So smooth, so quiet (especially compared to my loud diesel), such a nice place to be.

And this isn't so much a gripe about the Genesis in particular, but rather all sedans: much less storage space than my Megacab. Gotta find places to put all my stuff! Also, why is the trend to have no way to check transmission fluid level? I get it on high end luxury cars where the only service will be done at the dealer under a service contract, but I like working on my own cars. Hell, Mercedes and BMW are doing away with engine oil dipsticks too. Don't know how I feel about that. Especially having to run the engine to check the level, I foresee that ending badly.

I feel your angst...I watched a you tube video on this before purchasing my 2016(in sept 2019 gently used) 3.8 ultimate so I kind of knew what to expect.I have changed oil in all my cars for 40 years but this one is the most involved....This due to the 2 underbody panels you reference. After reading several posts on this forum I learned that a lot of Hyundai dealers would allow the owners to bring in their oil of choice(my case is 5W30 Mobil1..which I pick up on sale at Walmart or Costco) and charge for labor and filter if owner does not provide one.So I contacted my local dealer(in Michigan) and they did just that...I brought in 7.2 quarts of oil..they supplied the filter. For tire rotation and labor to do oil change they quoted me a price of 40.00...which probably would have been less without the tire rotation. As a long story short...dealer had issues with the condition of the filter they had in stock(suspect condition..slightly smashed).. they went to another dealer to get a "good" filter...and another wrong filter snafu(one brought back for a 5.0).. in the end the dealer did change the oil and a tire rotation for me at NO CHARGE due to their mixup. Cannot say enough about how this Hyundai dealer in New Hudson is as to their GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!! at least in my case(was also a first time customer..they left me with a GREAT first impression btw). So it looks like this will be the route I will go in the future so as not to have to deal with the panels and all the associated fasteners that need to be removed to access the drain plug and filter.Which on my model both are underneath the motor area.Seems like some 3.8 have the filter access from the TOP of the motor.. maybe a check with you local dealer as I did may be an option you wish to consider..John
